Electronics Development

ODM – Original Design Manufacturer

In addition to the industrialization of customer projects, or Electronic Manufacturing Services, Melecs also develops products individually for our customers as Original Design Manufacturer.

Our R&D guarantees high-quality, environmentally friendly and cost-effective manufacturability in electronics development.

The product development by R&D covers all areas from concept development to series maturity.

Our R&D competences include all disciplines required for the development of electronic controls.

These are primarily electronic switch design, low-level software development and mechanical design.

Chronology of electronics development

The chronology of product development can be divided into different phases: concept, A sample, B sample and design verification, C sample and product validation, and D sample and release.

1.

CONCEPT PHASE

This phase is part of the tendering. In this phase, the requirements for the product are analyzed and the system architecture and implementation options are drafted. A feasibility and risk analysis is conducted in parallel to the requirements analysis and the drafting of implementation concepts. At the start of the project, a project order with all relevant information is drawn up for the project team. It includes all the relevant information for the project team.

3.

B SAMPLE PHASE

The B sample that is then developed, the development sample, has the form of the series product and should include all of its functionalities. However, it may have slight deviations in some performance criteria, such as temperature or EMC. It is usually constructed with materials from prototype suppliers using test tools and manual processes.

The B sample serves to demonstrate all the functions of the product with the aid of tests run during development, and a design verification takes place which demonstrates the suitability of the product design.

2.

A SAMPLE PHASE

The start of a project generally involves simulation, development and manufacture of an A sample, i.e. the prototype or first development sample. This serves to demonstrate the feasibility of the functions required of the product and may still significantly deviate from the actual product in form as well as in function.

4.

C SAMPLE PHASE

Once the design verification is complete, development starts on the C sample. This corresponds in full to the series product and is also manufactured using the same materials from serial tools and production and test systems. The C samples are subjected to product validation with which the suitability of the production processes is demonstrated.

5.

RELEASE PHASE

The product development is concluded by the release process. In the automotive sector, this is generally a Production Part Approval Process, or PPAP, which includes the manufacture of D samples in a Run@Rate as well as the delivery of the project and product documentation including validation reports.
